I am currently 16 and have been interested in copens for a long time, and by my 17th birthday, I hope to own one. If anyone can give me a few pointers in what to look for, and what to avoid, all comments would be greatly appreciated. Also great to be a part of CopenWorld!
Orite Will, we've only just acquired our Copen so we're new to all of this but if you take the time to have a look around the site you'll pick up a few pointers, also the more hardened Copenista's will I'm sure chip in with some advice, I'll say one thing though don't do what I did and open the roof with summat in the boot ( still can't believe I did it what a numpty )...
Welcome to Copenworld Will, You obviously have good taste . You would probably be best with the 659cc Copen because of the insurance but check it out, my insurance company won't insure my 18 and 20 year old boys on my 1.3 but I know other people have had more success. Here is a buyers guide for you to look through - it lets you know what to be wary of when buying, the biggest problems are rust and making sure it has been serviced every 3000 miles - if not your turbo could go and that is expensive to repair. https://www.copenworld.com/vb3/showthread.php?t=1078 Where abouts in the Southwest are you, my 20 year old is at Bath Uni so we are down there quite a lot and there are a couple of members based down that way. Have fun scouring the forum, then you will be an expert by the time you are 17!
Ive look at quotes for both the 1.3 and the 0.7, and for some reason in the past 3 months it has gone up by £200+, by the time it is my birthday I will have 3k to spend on a copen (not including insurance) so will that be enough for a good one? also I live on the outskirts of Bristol and I visited bath uni very recently for my A level P.E.
Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't want a Copen as a first car. That said, my first car was a Pajero so what do I know
Well i thought seeing as i am young, it is the best time to have a 2 seater roadster, and the copen is not practical, but apparently it is super fun. And i think that is the thing to do when im young, before i have children and have to put practical matters, in front of personal pleasure. But thank you for the infomation.
What I said was not disparaging to you, apologies if it came off that way - it's just my opinion. Visibility is not great in the Copen, parts are mucho expensive, she's very low to the ground, and you feel somewhat vulnerable driving her next to a big F'off 4x4. I know I'd be apprehensive driving her as my first car
£3,000 should get you a decent 0.7 but the insurance could be a problem, check it with a full licence as well as provisional because it goes up quite a lot when you pass your test and can drive alone. I had an "almost" sensible car as my first car but got an MG Midget when I was 18 and loved it, it is the time to have fun but you just have to be sensible and careful at the same time and give yourself time to get used to the car before you have too much fun
I know the full licence is around 1800 with a black box, but i am willing to pay for it, the good thing i see is that copen's dont seem to depreciate that much, and i will be sensible with the copen, and it should be a great car to get used to as it is small. parking etc, should be more easy.
copen was my first car - although I was a big bit older than 16! I think it's a fine first car if you can stomach the insurance - even at 39 it was over 500 for me as a beginner.
I was 19 when I got my Copen (Number6 - I'd previously driven a 1995 Mini and I felt far more vulnerable in that!), but I don't know of any other young Copen drivers. I think if you can afford one, you should go for it - small, fun, reliable and super cute, what more could you want from a car?
Hi Will! I am 21 and i got my Copen at 20 its my first car and ive loved it ever since i got it. A lot of people dont know what she is, especially being de-badged so you do get asked quite a lot of questions. But its fairly cheap on insurance. I have the 1.3 model also and it goes well! surprises a lot of people. Hope you manage to find one that you are looking for! P.S i have just created a new Youtube channel for my Copen check it out here, if you have any questions pop me a line! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmXRRRi7HKQAWey-LVVrDXw
Thanks so much for watching Jules! really glad you enjoyed it i just love her so much, i always wake up hoping its sunny outside to go driving! never is though haha I plan to upload a video each day/week if i can. Thanks again!
Hi Matt just seen your video on your copen tour, i was just wondering where did you get the speedo on the windscreen xomax thing? Cheers Will
like people have said, check for visible rust on rear arches, if its bubbling on the rear arches its gonna have rust else were, with the roof up visibility is rubbish for blind spots, as standard they are not that low and have no problems with speed bumps ect ect. mine is lowerd 30/40mm and can still navigate speed bumps in a type of side ways fashion. check for smoke on boost and over run as turbos are not cheap and not easy to find second hand. but the turbo model is easily modified to be pushing out around 90bhp on standard turbo parts are expencive and some times hard to get and modified parts are even harder and cost big money, but can all be custom home made
hello will im a copen veteran you could say heh.. suprised a 16 year old is interested in a copen and as a first car the insurance will be alot i remember when i wanted a copen years before i got mine and it was too much for me to insure so i ended leaving it for about 4 or 5 years when it was cheaper as well as the car to buy luckly for me when i brought my copen i got a red vivid copen 2 and a half years ago and paid £2100 for it with 17,000 miles on the clock which was a bargin then and would still be one now
Hi Paul, i can see why you are surprised that i like the copen. However im unlike most of the people my age. I can look deeper into things, and the copen is fun well equiped for the price. And also being 16 i have no kids no worries, so i think the copen is perfect. I know the insurance is a lot of money. It is like £1800 but im working very often and i am prepared to take that hit. Plus i checked after the 1st year with 1 year no claims and the price is nearly cut in half, and yes i will have a black box.
