I only just noticed today on my way home from work that my copen seams very underpowered. It has a bit of a fast rattle coming from the turbo on acceleration. Feels like the car is cold and constantly experiencing turbo lag all through the rev range. Admittedly I have not had the money to survive it for a very long time. It has 105,000km on the clock. Is fitted with what looks like an aftermarket wastegate controll adjuster which has been there since I bought it and there are a couple of big pipes on the top of the engine that have been plugged up. Is very reliable otherwise and is great on petrol. Any ideas?
Hi Scotant09, Welcome to Copenworld. I think it's bad news. As you say you haven't had it serviced for a while. My guess is that your experiencing turbo failure or the beginning of it. Copen turbo's don't like old oil. They need regular oil changes every 3000 miles, filters every 6000 miles. New turbo = ££££ Can you post a photo of what is installed under bonnet? So we can see what pipes have been blocked up.
Thanks . Spoke to a couple of guys at work and they said much the same. Seals and/bearings may be out the door. And I live in Australia, and Daihatsu don't operate here anymore, so parts are rear. Do you know the male and model of turbo fitted to this car from factory? Will post a photo of the top of my engine with the plugged upipes later today. And is it hard to remove the boost control? I fear it may have contributed to this issue. Thanks again.
Found the make and model of turbo. It is an IHI VQ50. Looking to replacement now. Sealed unit to, so can't rebuild. Will send photo soon.
Check out yahoo auctions in Japan for used turbo's. This is only link in the UK that I've found for a turbo. New from a dealer: http://daihatsu-copen.sgpetch.co.uk/pages/parts/detail/category=engine/engine=169/part=3317
Knew I read something about turbos, check this thread: http://forums.copenworld.com/showthread.php?t=630 Can you buy Daihatsu parts through Toyota dealers in Australia?
These are not mine, but represent what is missing: http://www.burnpavement.com/upload/image/t_1301590312_dsc_4119.jpg In the above photo you will notice the pipe going from the inter cooler to the throttle body, there is a pipe bridging off this running parallel with the intake manifold, this pipe has has a blow-off valve fitted to it (in mine it is plugged up), there is a corresponding pipe connects to the crank case breather and then to an open air filter (along with a few other smaller vacuum lines). http://daihatsucars.kamikaze-drive.com/COPEN004E.jpg In this image, you can see what looks to be a big black vacuum diaphragm activated relief valve. I think it might be the "Over Boost" regulator, but am not sure. I also need to know where the smaller vacuum hose that connects to the diaphragm connects to, so that when I buy one, I can re-install it properly.
The last picture looks like a standard engine bay to me. With the original factory BOV spurring of the intercooler pipe.
That is correct, it is a standard engine, but it base this part that the first one is missing. That bIg black part is what I am trying to figure out what it is so I can re-install it. The forum will not let me attach photo that I have taken, I will send you my private e-mail address and once I have yours, I will send you the photos I took, because these ones are not very good.
dwayner Hi there, i havent had the turbo problem as yet, but i have already ordered another one from Japan, just in case, Im in Melbourne australia, so have to go thru toyota australia, but the turbo is a very expensive part - considering how small it is - someone in my are who owned one last year or so modified the turbo and it blew up causing about 6,000 dollars damage - so i dont sare modify anything - did you finally get a new turbo at all in australia?
You can see in my earlier comment, the make of the turbo is IHI, the model is VQ50. The distributor for IHI in Aus. is MTQ Engine systems in south Australia, phone number is 08 8243 2688. Cost is $1580 AUD.
Your missing the standard blow of valve assembly. Which unless you have a similar device else where I don't think is a good thing. I'm not an expert though! Below is a link to Wikipedia on BOV's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blow_off_valve If your car dosen't have one, it could have caused your turbo failure. Below is a picture of my engine bay, I have a Take Off Pushshun RSS after market BOV. You can see where all the smaller pipes connect to.

Adam K, just e-mailed the photo to you mate. I was a michanic many moons ago, but at a Benz dealer, most of my experience was with either supercharged or naturally aspirated engines, turbo diesels went specialist techs. Any-who, bov's are a dime a dozen, if I can't find a factory one, is there a spacific rating I should be looking for? And the trigger vacuum line, can't see exactly what that is connected to, please let me know. Thanks guys.
You know more about things than me then. Here's your other picture: Looks like a manual boost controller to me. I don't know any specs on the standard BOV, I'm affraid. Have you downloaded the service manual from the features tab at the top of the forum? It might show where the pipes connect to. This might help you, it's from a company in Australia. It might be worth buying it rather than hunting for the Daihatsu one. http://www.xspeed.com.au/manuals/FG-ADM-COPEN.pdf
Here's just what you need. Don't know if they'd post to Australia though. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/166-2004-...arParts_SM&hash=item53e4a13e4f#ht_3021wt_1126
