I've gone through the manuals, but I can't see a way of either registering / programming a new key transponder chip to the Copen with our without the special master key (aka the black key) Is this something I can do myself or do I need to go to a dealer?
I foolishly tried going to a Toyota dealer (who service/support Daihatsu here since they left) - with a new original "grey" key, with my black master key as well. After 2 hours of trying I had a bill for $160 for their time - and a "sorry, we can't do it. Some keys just won't take a new code - the last 3 have been the same". They tried the proper Diahatsu method (so they say) - might have been operator error the last 3 times also. I went to a local locksmith that day - handed him the master key - he cloned it to a non-OEM key in about 5 minutes for less than $100. They use a cloning machine available off EBAY etc for about $400 - and they knew a damn lot more that the dealer about the different transponder chip types and what could/couldn't be done.
I have the key copied already - it's a Texas 4C chip, so easy to copy by any locksmith. What I'm talking about is programming MORE keys into the immobiliser.
Thanks to Google, the following steps may work, provided you have the black master key: Connect the terminal T to Terminal E on the DLC / OBDII port Insert the master key into the ignition Turn on the ignition Turn off the ignition Remove the key from the ignition (Withinn 10s) turn on the ignition using the sub key Turn off the ignition Remove the key from the ignition Repeats steps 6-8 using another key After the final key removal, wait 30 seconds. All keys should now work Terminal T is OBDII pin 13 and terminal E is OBDII pin 4
I won't count my chickens until I try it out. Those steps are for the Daihatsu YRV, which I hope uses the same immobiliser ECU. There are two other methods - one involving an intricate dance with the brake and accelerator pedals, the other involves opening and closing the doors. Both seem to work for Toyota, so they may work for Daihatsu. Failing that, I also bought a 4D key jobbie, that plugs into the OBDII port, which may work with the 4C transponders. I imagine it's really easy to do this with the DS-2 scan tool. If this all works the way I want to, I will have a single key with an integrated door fob!
There is a programming section on the DS-2 for the immo. I have not played around in there - and unless needs must I only screw with stuff I have to! No point rocking a steady boat
With any luck I won't need the DS-2 for the immobiliser - I'll find out tomorrow. With any luck, I will get time over Christmas to sniff the DS-2 instructions to the different ECUs.
The following steps have been confirmed as working. You will need all your keys, as programming mode makes the immo ECU forget all keys expect the black master key. Connect the terminal T to Terminal E on the DLC / OBDII port Insert the master key into the ignition Turn on the ignition (do not turn over the car) Turn off the ignition Remove the key from the ignition (Withinn 10s) turn on the ignition using the sub key Turn off the ignition Remove the key from the ignition Repeats steps 6-8 using another key After the final key removal, wait 30 seconds. Remove the OBDII short Terminal T is OBDII pin 13 and terminal E is OBDII pin 4
The DS-II has an IMB screen, but it only shows trouble codes. Not too sure how you'd replace the black master key, so keep it safe!
