My cooling fan cuts in when the engine is not running
too hot. It runs for a short time then stops. It then repeats.
Has anybody had this problem and found the answer.
    Thanks
    David

The fan comes on with the AC from time to time.

As @jez77 says, the fan will be triggered by the AC and is nothing to worry about.

I have now looked at the electrical circuits and you are quite correct about the AC switching on the fan.
The background is that this week I found the battery had gone down to 4.5 volts. When last putting the car away the radiator cooling fan was running - to cool things down, especially the turbo. I thought it might be the rad. cooling fan coming on when parked in the garage - thus draining the battery.
Battery is OK now I have recharged it, and hold the charge. But this cause of the flat battery is a mystery.

It’s most likely an old battery. They are relatively low capacity and I paid for diagnosis of a battery drain through a respected auto electrician. I ended up paying for a new alternator (big bill) and it still didn’t fix the long term issue. Turned out that the cold weather highlighted a faulty cell which was identified by a crusty old mechanic with a healthy distrust of computers and diagnostics !
