Hi everyone, I’ll try and give you a bit of background around my wife’s car.

We bought the car from new in 2007, car ran fine apart from the usual water ingress into the boot and footwell area.

In 2017 we laid the car up in my wife’s parents garage as she purchased another car due to work commitments but could bear to be parted from her beloved “Gracie”.

In March this year we had to move the car out if the garage due to potentially selling the house, we decided to get the car back on the road for the summer, so Mot’d Insured, taxed and ready to go...then the Covid situation happened.

So, went to the car yesterday, opened the roof but will not raise unless I help it fold back, boot then locks normally. Same issue when you raise it, you have to give it a significant help. No error lights, essentially the roof works fine if you help it Along it’s way.

Ive greased up the mechanism, still the same problem. Fluid level appears to be ok on the pump. No water ingress, completely dry in the boot.

Any ideas? If it’s the pump, is this an easy fix for someone who doesn’t have a great selection of tools or indeed mechanical capability.

Thank you, appreciate any guidance or help anyone may have.

Check you're getting 14v at the battery with engine running, try revving it a bit while operating roof.

Thanks for the reply, I can’t validate the voltage as I don’t have a meter, however I can confirm that I have tried revving when operating the roof. I get all the right noises from the motor when trying to operate the roof.

When you say you greased the mechanism, what lubricant did you use ? I’d initially use something like a spray with PTFE rather than a traditional grease which can and probably will bunk up over time.

My guess is you’re not getting enough current (not volts) to the motor. Assuming you’re happy with the current being delivered from the alternator, I would start by checking the earth connections. Start from the -ve terminal, then the strap to the body, and finally the connections to the roof motor in the boot. Take them off and use wire wool or a wire brush and then give them a bit of Vaseline so you don’t have to redo the job later.

I'm having a similar issue, I recently got my first 2004 copen and the roof is so slow moving that I have to give it a helping hand to get through the movements. It can do some parts itself but any heavy lifting (even with high engine revs) just isn't budging. I've checked the roof alignment, tested the battery and alternator (both okay) and tried resetting the roof and window ECU, no error codes coming up. The hydraulic fluid is also full. The next plan is getting a multimeter and testing the connectors, I have a feeling the pump just isn't getting enough power but won't know until I've tested it tomorrow. Any other suggestions of things to investigate would be helpful though! Thanks

Hi - we have the same issue - it has always been a little slow but recently has needed some help. We have cleaned the mechanism and re lubricated it all to no avail. The hydronic fluid reservoir seems full, but looking to see if we can bleed it. Would very much appreciate any other solutions people have tried

    Hi all,
I purchased a 2002 Copen at auction in Japan. It's at the mechanic now, and one of the issues is the top running very slowly. The mechanic has put on a rebuilt pump motor (warranted for a year). It's supposed to fix the issue.
