Not sure if this has been covered somewhere before what is the offical insurance group rating for the copen? According to the vehicle summary information on autotrader it states it as being insurance group 9. That differs massively from what my insurance company's rating (24ish).

    I think mine is 9 or 10.
Not sure if the insurance groups mean to much these days - all that matters is what you pay. Admiral normally quite good. (no, I don't get commission )

Believe there are different scales used by different insurers - my Copen with one Co is a 9 and my Mazda 6 Estate is a 24 with another! Cost is about the same?

The Mazda with 163 bhp still gets left behind by the Copen with a mere 86!

    Hope this helps.

Despite the cost, it is insured.... even though, believe it or not, car insurance is actually optional here!

"too expensive to insure??" must be different in NZ, unless yours is an import
of "alternative foriegn classification" - or made for another country originally.but moved on to another country
Im in Australia, and RACV insurance based it on engine capactiy.
    (i have the smaller engine)
it works out at $285.00 a year, but i pay monthly 30.00 a month roughly.
it isnt classified as a sports car in australia, under RACV classification

    Daihatsu Copen 1.3
In my country it must depend purely on engine displacement.
The fee I pay to insure the 1.3 Copen is rather low (probably the lowest) compared to fees for other cars I have insured.
But please, don't give them any ideas! ;)

I brought the car over from the UK when I moved here recently, but all of the insurance companies I tried claimed that wouldn't increase the premium to any significant degree. It's the bigger engine, just one year old.

I insured it in a bit of a hurry, so didn't have much time to shop around, and I'm not familiar with the local insurance market yet. I tried 3 insurance companies, and none of them seemed to know what a Copen is. They all classified it as "higher risk" due to it being a 2 seater convertible (overnight garaging was mandatory for all of the policies on offer), and the best quote I got was about NZ$800, which is around double what I paid in the UK.

I'm hoping to do a lot better when I next renew and have more time to shop around!
