Hi all, It's great to be back in the Copen scene again! I've previously been a member of both this forum (in its first revision, circa 2006ish?) and Copen Owners Club UK. My previous Copen was certainly a bag of fun after I'd purchased a HKS DX30, a HKS intake kit and installed a custom exhaust system. Luckily, mum bought the car off me when I moved, so it's stayed in the family. Time has passed and I've just bought a non-running Copen for an absolute steal, with the intention of doing a full rebuild and repeat of my previous one. I've got a couple of pics so far, but stay tuned for my various updates and mod threads.
It looks nice already, I look forward to seeing what you do! Are you keeping the registration number?
I would've loved to use the plates, but the previous owner had put them on her other car before I bought the Copen. (the pics are from the ad before I'd bought it)
*Update* I've been working on some other projects since my last post, but I've now got some time and cash aside to get the Copen underway. Taking the head into the machining shop tomorrow to get it cleaned, crack tested, resurfaced and a port + polish. Oh, you thought this one was going to be tame? PS: Does anyone know where I can get uprated valves/springs?
I'll be following this keenly. My Copen project is way on the back burner whilst the house renovations are in progress. I can't wait for them to end...
I feel your pain! I had a whole bunch of projects around the house that needed doing before I could even think about the Copen
Grrr... Got a few speed bumps in my build at the moment. Firstly, the shop doing the work on the head contacted me to say that there were some bits missing from the box of parts from the previous owner. Those bits happened to be 10 retaining collets for the valve springs and 16 valve lifters... So, I called up Toyota and got them to look up the parts. They've been discontinued. Then, I found a guy wrecking a Copen on Gumtree, so I asked if he was willing to sell the head. He said that he'd only sell the engine whole, with a price of $2200 PLUS freight PLUS I had to give them my engine! I've tried getting the parts overseas, from other motors and various other nefarious methods. I'll keep looking, but I may be facing Plan B, which I'd be ok with. Plan B is still being researched, but it may involve a larger Daihatsu motor and a turbo.
Plot twist... A motor with 60,000km just came up for sale in the past couple of days, so I snagged it for a fantastic price. Hopefully, if the other couple of parts arrive on time, I'll be fitting it this weekend!
Water pump has arrived and I'll be checking out the clutch before I put in the new motor and gearbox. Not long now!
Good luck!! I am so impressed that you are able to tackle such a massive project and you seem to take it in your stride! Keenly following developments from England. OB
Thanks Badger! Your profile pic reminds me of when my mum used to read Wind in the Willows to me. Hahaha
Do you think Toad would have enjoyed driving a Copen? Maybe a bit on the small side for his ego! Alternatively Badger may have considered it too racy and "sent it back"!!
Oh definitely Badger!! He'd have been sat in that driving seat, roof down, with his hat and goggles on going "Parp, Parp!" and tearing through the countryside sending little old washer women scurrying for cover and causing his greatest friends, Mole and Ratty to "tut tut" with despair; as for Badger himself ......
