    Hi All

I bought my 04 reg copen last week and its suddenly starting producing a loud vibrating/banging noise once the fan heater has been on for a few seconds. It seems to be unrelated to movement, revs or heat, and is rather random. Are they prone to loose fan casings? Or dodgy heater fans? Going to try to get the dash out to look at it this weekend so if anyone has done that I'd appreciate some tips too please....!

On an unrelated issue am also thinking of fitting a new stereo and maybe a sub - if anyone has ideas of where to put the sub or a good stereo please do share!

    Thanks

do they put the speaker in flush between the seats where the cargo net pocket is? behind the seats might be somewhat muffled.

Hi Kate, not heard of issues with the fan heater before. Maybe it's just a bit of debrise.
I have a small active sub that is velcro'd to the carpet behind the passenger seat. Perfect for adding a bit of extra base.

I had a feeling I had read someone had put a speaker behind their seat, it was you then Adam! I imagined its rather muffled being so close to back of the seat. Unless you are short and pull the seat close up

Sooooo....in the words of the mechanic, my fan heater engine is f****d!
They are quoting me in excessof £600 to buy in and fit a new one from Japan. Im now trying to locate a second hand one, but I need a full unit with motor, not just the fan.
Can anyone give me any tips for sourcing second hand copen parts please?
I've only had it 4 weeks.....:-((

    Hi Kate,
I'm surprised you need the entire unit!
Have you downloaded the service manual from the directory section?

In section K1-8 of the manual there is a nice exploded view of the heater unit.
I'd show this to your mechanic to see if he can point out which component is needed.

The three main serviceable parts I can see, are available on ebay as used spares:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/152-2003-...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item53e1aa617b

Looks like all these parts are on sale too. Might be worth contacting the breakers PCS to see if they have kept the housing parts.

You're a star Adam! They said the whole unit is on its last legs and needs replacing. But they're not jap car specialists. I am tempted to get all the parts replaced while its open...will check out these links. Very odd for a whole fan heater to go in an 04 reg car though, out of the blue?!

Might be why the previous owner decided to sell.

Download the service manual. The pictures are very helpful. Plus it might help your mechanic.

It's in the 'Chassis' section of the workshop manual.

Adam, if its just making a noise is it unlikely that the heater matrix has failed? That part doesn't have any moving parts and I'd expect a failure to be a leak and that would be wet and silent! Unless its just loose.

And Kate says its loud and vibrating, thats sounds more mechanical wear and tear or a loose component.

If the fan is moving its not electrical. Does it still heat?

Totally agree Trustafox. That's why I think it's a bit excessive to change the whole unit.
The mechanic might not be aware that the fan can be removed seperatly. Not the easiest thing to get at.
For quickness I'd be tempted to buy the fan & just replace that for now.

Did you find the right section of the manual Kate?

Yes it still heats, the noise is sporadic and gets worse with impact or intensity of fan (on setting 4 its constant and loud) the mechanic is happy to fit second hand parts but thinks the motor is going. I bought that fan heater blower link adam put up off ebay as in the exploded K-1-8 diagram it looks like thats the motor part....but still confused about why its gone so soon and suddenly. Bought it Wednesday, drove it newcastle to brighton - no noise. First thing Thursday morning, fan heater sounded like death.....

Did you contact the seller first? as you should have a limited warranty which after a day I expect you are still in.

I know it would be along journey if you have to drive it back up north, then maybe have to go home and leave it there for repair and then pick up and back. But you could try to compromise if you get it fitted they pay for parts. Saves them labour. Record a short vid of yourself turning the fan on and off on your phone to send seller if wants proof.

Could it be affected by weather or storage. That being outside or the drive home worked something loose, like debris.

Where is the air inlet Adam for the fan? Does it have a cabin filter and is this missing to allow some debris to get in? just a thought.

I've looked through the manuals & diagrams. The air comes in through the air conditioning unit. The air feed for that unit looks to come in behind the wiper motor. I can't see a filter before the air conditioning. However I'm sure I've read that people have said it's a chore to change the filter. I think this maybe on cars in Asia only though.
Looking at the route any debris would have to travel to get into the fan area. I don't think anything big would get through.

I would do what trustafox said and contact the seller. There is no reason why you can't get the car repaired in your area and send the invoice to the dealer who sold you the car.

thats what I asked my dealer over the phone before I bought the car. for small repairs get it done locally and send the bill. For something major, like the ash tray gets full, then would be back to them.

Inform them first though Kate, don't just drop a bill on their mat!
