Hello, I am about 5 hours away from inspecting a Daihatsu Copen 2004 before purchase. I am both excited and bit worried. The lad who is selling the car says it may need a new timing belt and little bits. Any tips on what to look out for?
Agree with him that the timing belt is overdue for replacement (because this car does not have one), maybe he will give you a discount. To be honest, you should have come and read into the topic a bit earlier, as this car has got some surprises for you if you are not prepared. The most important bit: Did they give it an oil change every 3000 miles? How rusty is it? Does the roof work? Good luck!
The lady has owned the car for 10 years with 34000 miles on the clock.Unfortunately she never(surprisingly) did any oil change. theres a couple of bubbles on the wheel edges but nothing too drastic. The roof, heating, lights etc... all work perfectly. My main concerns that the car is loosing power at the moment. I am stuck at assessing what sort of damage may have been caused by not replacing the oil every £3000.
@ELvis Did you buy it? I sure hope you didn't. Well, maybe for 500 quid I would have. The losing power and the non-existent oil change will probably be closely connected. I suspect the turbo has gone bad... This will be a major headache!
10 years and 34000 miles without an oil change. I doubt that, but, without a service history I would avoid it especially as it also has power issues! walk away
Thanks to your advise I didn't buy it. The lady rejected a £700 offer insisting on £900. I strongly suspect the Turbo and unfortunately don't even know where to start searching for a replacement.
Dodged a bullet, I'm very glad for you. Regarding turbos: You can always have the original one refurbished, but it is almost as expensive as buying a new one
£900 are 1000 Euros, what is the problem for this tiny car? Remember what thats cars had cost 2004. Put an new HKS turbo in it, engine overhaul, repaint and smile
