Hi, I've been looking at the forum since before I bought my copen in May and it's been really useful. Sadly after a long trip last weekend my turbo failed and the cost of a new one looks like it might be the end of the road for me and my lovely car Does anyone know where I can get one for a reasonable price??? Thanks
Hi Luna, Welcome to Copenworld, Bad luck. Check this thread: https://www.copenworld.com/vb3/showthread.php?t=1142
When I was looking for a Copen that was the the thing that put me off a turbo version. I was concerned about possible turbo failure and the crazy cost of replacement. That was why I upped my budget and bought a 1.3.
Same here DaG. Also the hassle of when it goes and how long I'm off the road. I would have liked a dark blue or green with tan leather though, something new and different for me. I have wondered though how do tell when the turbo goes? is it significantly different from other problems
Dead Turbo Thanks for both of your comments. I've looked at the links and will follow those up. One question, does the 1.3 copen not have a turbo then? Just thinking about the future and if I don't get mine repaired saving up and buying a 1.3 if there are less problems. Thanks, Luna
When the turbo went there was a sound like a popping cork and then the power disappeared and even with my foot to the floor I was only going 20 40 mph!
The 1.3 doesn't have a turbo it's a Toyota Yaris engine. The standard 1.3 Yaris engine in a car as light as a Copen gives the car excellent power to weight ratio which results in decent acceleration and very good MPG. I suppose technically the 1.3 Copens aren't Kei cars anymore, but as this isn't Japan who cares. Luna, there are companies that refurb turbos, have you tried getting a quote for a repair? Here's one company who list the Copen. http://www.universal-turbos.com/catalogue.asp
Urm...hello. Me in the corner. My hose from the intercooler come off the turbo once. Could hear the turbo spooling but not power, just like Luna described.
I imagined there would be a loss of power, but didn't know it it was a loud pop, band and ball bearing flying like bullets in all directions or it was just a wimper and the car moved like Luna said. Adam, are turbos easy to fit, like a straight swap over? for a wrench confident guy to fit themselves instead of have to pay for a garage. Or do they need mechanical and/or electronic setting up.
Ah well that's me banned from any future Kars in the park meets. A relative of mine a good few years ago had a Renault 11 turbo and the turbo packed in. The lad and his father set about trying to replace the turbo but couldn't even find the thing. They took it to a small local garage and after having the car for a day the garage phoned him up and said they couldn't fix it. I reckon they couldn't find it either.
maybe it just had a turbo sticker on the back and thats all! If you banned DaG I'll join you with my "not a Kei car who cares anyway" Copen
There wasn't an inch of space under the bonnet. God only knows how those Frenchies managed to put the thing together in the first place. You a Leicester city fan then TAF? I was just wondering with the fox bit in your name. My team actually won tonight and I wasn't there. I've forgotten what it's like for Sunderland to win a match.
Thanks, I've been in touch with them so fingers crossed they will have some good news. I've also been in touch with a garage who has a 1.3 for sale to see if they will part exchange but not heard from them so think that may be a no!
Replacing the turbo is a swap over job. Straight out of the box. You'd need to take most of the front off to do it though. A confident home mechanic should be able to give it a go. No Copen owners are banned from KKITP meets. Even if they did decide to buy a 1.3 version. The young lady who runs the club even has a 1.3 Copen.
Thanks Adam, will ask the garage to double check that it is the turbo but pretty sure it is, they said that the oil seal hadn't broken so the engine hadn't been covered in oil. I think that's what they said, I was still in shock at that point! Have been following the contacts on your link too so hopefully I will find a solution soon. Thank you for all of your help.
That company I linked to was just an example there are a lot of others who do the same thing. Type turbo repairs into google and also your area and try to find a local company. Hopefully though it will be a similar problem to Adam's and not too expensive.
Is a turbo repair usually satisfactory or more likely to go again than a new one? i.e does a repair give it back the lifespan of a new one. Adam, I see you installed an induction kit. When I've done some inlet mods before on previous cars I have notice an improvement of ease of pick up and hit high revs a bit easier, but with a turbo is that not noticeable?
With the induction kit, the engine feels a lot more free revving & more responsive. The standard air intake is restrictive on the turbo engine. A very weird shaped filter.
No DaG, not a foxes fan. Not into football these days. The fox, and the rest of it is from a song title by that name from my fave band. Sunderland plays football!!!?
