Hello Struggling to find a replacement key fob (2 button for central locking etc), Timsons tested my working fob, they tell me its on 331MHz (not sure if this is non-standard as the vehicle is 2002 pre-UK launch build - very likely Australian spec) he thinks he can retune a generic fob but would need to experiment, cost £130! does this sound reasonable? on another thought, does anyone know if this would work Universal Car Remote Central Locking Upgrade Kit Keyless Entry With 2Pcs Remote | eBay Hope everyone stays safe and has kei fun in the sun.....
Hi CheekySusie, I have had dealings with Timpsons and I think there are threads on here discussing them. I found them to be expensive, not very flexible not knowledgeable at all (all very computer says no). They will only use one of their blank keys and the immobiliser chips they use are a resin cartridge type designed to shatter if you touch them. With a bit of phoning round even in lockdown I found a proper automotive specialist who did exactly what I wanted and cheaper too. I would seek an alternative to Timpsons. I should think that ebay item should work as long as it is installed correctly (there are lots of youtube videos with instructions) and fitting something like that might actually work out cheaper and give you more fobs. They orignal system would still be there in the background if you wanted to go back. I had similar issues a while ago as I only had one remote fob and the existing alarm was malfunctioning. At that point I had my ignition key, an alarm fob and the remote central locking fob. Given that orignal fobs are expensive and rare I decided as I needed a new alarm anyway to consolidate it all into one fob. After a couple of local alarm places told me it couldn't be done I bought for a aftermarket alarm with remote locking off ebay and fitted it myself (if I can do it most people can). Car Alarm Remote Central Lock Immobiliser AL669HC | eBay With some tinkering and a few fuses later I now have alarm, remote central locking and boot release and ignition on a flip key fob (I have 3 of them) which has room for the immobiliser chip inside (see picture). I told the seller which key blank I needed when ordering then I found someone to cut it and clone my immobiliser chip (unfortuantely their system didn't have the Copen in it so they couldn't reprogram only clone). Few months later and it's still working.
Thanks MCP I like your suggestion of alarm with the remote in the key. Another Copen related job for partner to do.
Does it have an alarm already? My life was made a lot easier by getting hold of the wiring diagram for the(malfunctioninig) alarm I already had and using that to help me know where to connect. The Copen wiring diagrams from the workshop manual are also invaluable. You could also technically just connect up the central locking and boot release if you wanted and not wire up the alarm bit if your hubby fancied an easier life.
