Hi there, can anybody help with the catalytic converter light staying on? I’ve had everything changed that needs to be but the light will not go off!

Hi Kit, sorry to hear about your problems. In your message you omit to let us know what engine size your car has and you say you have everything changed that needs to be. Can you let us know what items they were, and where you usually get your fuel from so we can get to the bottom of the issue?

Many thanks for your response. I’m writing on behalf of my Father so needed to check details. The engine size is 659cc. He had the number 1 sensor changed (at the front of the engine) and fuel is usually bought from Tescos or Morrisons.

    Hi Kit

In the first instance did you take the car to the garage with a misfire? If you did and they diagnosed that the first O2 number 1 sensor was at fault did they show you the readout with the diagnostic number so as to identify the correct sensor. If that’s the case you need to take the car back and ask them why the engine fault light has come back on again. There are two sensors in that area one monitors exhaust going into the cat and the second sensors the exhaust coming out to make sure it meets MOT standards.

Fuel plays a part in this as the engine is a small one like ours with a turbo it is a bit more sensitive to fuel quality rather like a motorcycle. We use BP ultimate every second or third tankful to help keep the cat clean and it also needs a good hard run up the motorway to bring it all up to working temperature. You can also choose a fuel additive like Redex.
