I damaged my right hand a few years ago. I can move it and grip things, but can't feel much and don't have much dexterity with that hand. I'm right handed too, which doesn't help. So, I though I would have a go at doing a filter change. The old filter came out easy enough, but the new one is proving to be a right pain to get on. Just whining really. I'll have to take the bumper off, and the inter-cooler. In the future, I'll have to do it the hard way...
Which filter did you get? The height of the new filter is important if you want it to fit through the hole in the engine bay. The Blueprint _should_ fit, the official daihatsu certainly fits, and it looks like the D-Sport "performance" one should fit as well.
I got the correct Daihatsu one - it fits through the hole OK, but I can't get it to engage on the threaded bit that comes out from the middle of the filter housing. It's really annoying - I was messing around with it for 45 minutes today, and just couldn't get it on. I guess I am going to have to find a way of making it easier to do it via the 'bumper-off, inter-cooler off' technique for the long-term, or pay someone to do it for me. So annoying...
I think so - that's not as silly a question as it might seem to anyone reading this - I can't be the only person to have struggled with a hard-to-reach nut hidden behind something before realising I'm turning it the wrong way. I'll have another go before taking everything apart though, just in case...

Done it. Here are the steps you need to take to do it one-handed. Get the correct sized oil filter - 50mm tall. The filter goes in through the engine mount underneath the car. If you are lucky, the old one comes out the same way. Get the filter more or less in place. It's difficult to see what you are doing and very difficult to screw the filter on though the engine mount - it's probably worth a go while you are there, but I wouldn't mess about. If you haven't got it on in five minutes, it quite likely won't happen, so... Take the grill off - the standard grill has three plastic clips holding it on. You'll be able to see the oil filter way back between the air filter and the inter-cooler. Remove the top three bolts holding the bumper on. There is another one at the bottom, but you don't need to take the bumper off - you just need to make some wriggle room to do the next step. Remove the air filter box - it's held on with one bolt to the right. The sensor wire just pulls off. It's a bit of a fiddle, but with the bumper unattached at the top, you should be able to pull the whole thing out. It is easier if you take the top of the filter box off the bottom part and pull them out them one at a time. Use a fluted tool and a long, thin socket drive to get the filter into place and screw it on from the front of the car. Put everything back together. If I can make this work one-handed, then you won't have any problems.
i did my filter and oil change in sept 2016 and i didnt need to remove the bumper ect... just get one of them oil filter sockets and it makes removal and putting the new one on really easy plus i used a blueprint one and it fits perfect
Without thinking about it too much, I ordered a remote oil filter kit after hearing about how difficult it is to reach the filter. Now the kit has arrived, I can see I have my work cut out for me. I don't even see a good spot to mount the remote end. There's precious little room in there for anything. It would be nice to hear from someone who's actually made this work.
