Hi All My wife took her 2008 1.3 Copen in to Halfords for an air con check as there was no ice cool air coming out. They re-gassed it and all was well for about a week, when we noticed the cold air was not ice cool again. I suspected they just recharged the system without actually checking for leaks, so took the car back and explained. They apologised and did a free check and the diagnosis was.... "air conditioning compressor leaking, along with an "o-ring" seal on the bottom left hand side of the air con system. Advise replacement" Apart from the compressor replacement, I'm not entirely sure what size o-ring or part number this relates too, so will contact them again. They couldn't source any parts with the car being "rare and too old", so am now looking for suggestions please for places to source the parts. I did a Google search and it came back with a refurbed compressor on ebay, and an out of stock new compressor from "Autodoc". I still need to source the o-ring, but wondered also if there is a schematic of the air con system available at all, which may help to see which o-ring they are talking about. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Hi Technik, I'm afraid I'm experiencing a similar issue. I had an air con check at Halfords in June last year, and they confirmed there was no leakage, so they re-gassed it. However, this May, the cold air stopped again. In July, I took the car to an ex-Daihatsu dealer, and they re-gassed it with dye, explaining that they could detect leaks using UV light. Unfortunately, the cold air stopped after just 5 weeks. I still need to take the car back to the ex-Daihatsu dealer to identify the source of the leakage. I did some research on Japanese websites using Google Translate and found two part numbers for the air conditioning compressor, both of which are original Daihatsu OEM: 88320-97206, priced at £431 88320-97217, priced at £427 So far, I haven’t been able to determine which one is used for European models, but from what I understand, the first one is used in earlier models. From various Japanese websites, I've found that the Denso HFC134a is compatible with the OEM part, but whether it fits or not remains the big question. On this website: コペンL880Kエアコン修理 , it shows that there is an intercooler inside the dashboard that can also leak. As you can see on the website, they've removed the complete dashboard, which must be shockingly expensive and raises the risk of something breaking, adding to the cost. The O-ring is shown in the attached PDF. I haven’t been able to find the OEM part number, but I believe it's just a simple rubber O-ring.
Hi Shahram Azimi Nobar Thank you so much for your very comprehensive reply! Some very useful information there, and appreciate the schematic attachment you provided. There is a Japanese vehicle specialist garage nearby me, and am waiting to hear back from them with a price to provide the parts and complete the repair. I also contacted an Ebay seller that has a refurbished compressor, but I need to provide a photo and label details of our existing compressor to check compatability. Will have to see how easy to find and get a photo first. I don't want to be taking the dash out as per your link, so hopefully all is good behind there. I was told to replace the "dryer" unit when replacing the compressor, but from what I see this isn't too expensive. Will follow up with the outcome after some further research. Again, thank you for your time and the details!
Just an update on my previous post..... I eventually found a used a/c compressor from a specialist mechanic that works with Copens 3 months ago, and had that fitted at my local garage. It was a direct replacement and so it worked fine pushing out cold air again. Unfortunately it only lasted for 3 months, as it suddenly started to produce a loud knocking noise within itself ! So back to square one I'm afraid. It seems impossible to source a new replacement, so might have to take another chance with a used one again, unless I can find somewhere to get a refurbished one. The hunt continues!!
Hi Technik, I took some photos of the AC compressor. My Copen is a 2007 model with a 1.3L engine. The compressor is a Denso HFC134a, part number 447220-6900, with ID SCA06E. I’ve searched everywhere online, but finding a new one seems impossible, and I haven’t had any luck with a direct replacement. At this point, I think the best option is to find an expert who can refurbish it.
@Shahram Azimi Nobar, Thank you for this. I can get a used A/C compressor from a 650ccturbo engine, but not actually sure they share the same unit. I was even thinking I could get this as a donor unit even if it's 'dead', to send for refurbishment and save time removing ours before we replaced it. However, I have found a company in Hampshire that will refurbish our existing compressor and will give it a 2 year warranty, so I think we will go with this now. Thanks again.
Hi all There seems to be a problem with refurbished and new compressors fitted to different Copen but you may want to be made aware of the procedure in the manuals, concerning oil level that is critical in ensuring the new or refurbished compressor does not fail prematurely. In the manual on Page K1-17, it states at the bottom with diagrams on 6-1-5 Points of installation, Note:- Oil necessary for the entire air conditioner cycle has been sealed in a new compressor. Therefore, when only the compressor is replaced, oil is remaining inside the condenser and cooling unit. Hence, it is necessary to drain the oil of the amount concerned in the diagram. Failure to do this, will more than likely result in failure of the equipment.
Hello, I am a new member to Copenworld, the A/C compressor in my 1.3 2007 Copen has failed , would it be possible to have the details of the company in Hampshire for refurbishment? Many thanks.
Hi Kate I will reply a little later after I have done some research. I’ll try to locate the nearest one in Kent, who will probably do a proper job.
