I'm still in the buying process for a Copen. One that I'm looking at has a non-functioning air conditioner. The seller has never used it, and assumed it never worked. Would (or could) this end up being very expensive? What are the common causes (and preferably solutions) to checking this out? Is it difficult to get to the A/C unit?
If the air-con hasn't been used it could be a seized clutch on the compressor. Access to the compressor is a bit of a pain. Bumper off, air filter & maybe the intercooler too. The compressor will need a bit of a clean including cleaning the electrical connection. With a bit of TLC it'll probably un-seize. The whole air-con system will need a service & re-gassing. First step is to get an air-con engineer to try & service the system. They'll empty what gas is in the system, check for leaks then they'll re-gas adding some lubrication into the system. They should be able to tell you if there is a problem. I had an air-con issue on my car which was a seized clutch. I had bought a used compressor from a breakers in case the old one was knackered. Didn't need it. I still have it. Yours for £30 plus postage if you need it. Air-con service is about @£50. Add @£250 for labour to un-seize the clutch on the comoressor. That's if that's what's wrong.
Sweet - thanks for the advice Adam. Hopefully it won't come to that, but the offer is very much appreciated.
I didn't get one. I don't think you'll get a warning light for an a/c failure. It's not connected to the ECU.
My aircon has never worked, and I asked the garage to check it out whilst it was having the mot and service today. Turns out my compressor has gone too. I'd love to have it in winter, I think the copen is the steamiest car I've owned!
Dear Number6, Could you inform us if you have solve the issue you had with AC, and how ? It will be usefull for other members and may be enriched the subject Let us know if you can support hot weather this summer, we are a bit anxious Great time with you car
It turned out that the gas just leaked out. I have been told that there may be a hole in the line somewhere, which will need to be fixed... so the mystery is ongoing but not overly important for me at the moment.
Hello Number6 I had such an issue with an other car that my Copen. I bought a "repairing kit", containing some special fluid to solve small leak. I was really satisfied. Leak seems to be sealed, AC recharged, and everything is OK one year later. May be it could help Dublin summer is not so hot, but a well functionning car is a pleasure
Finally got the system fully tested. Turns out there *are* holes in two pipes, and the compressor gasket is gone. Does anyone happen to have a part number for the gasket? Would it make more sense to replace the entire air con compressor / pump?
I've got the compressor, rad and canister and rubber hose that I took of mine that will sell as it's of no use to me as pulled it all out to make room for the fmic
Squeaking sound as I put aircon on Hi friends I'd value your advice: my car runs normally & at times, when I switch on aircon, I hear a squeaking sound...switch a/c off & it stops. Is there anything like a belt doing this? Am the only copen in Mauritius & would value ur light! by the way, if so, where can I see the belt? Tx so much for ur help.
The A/C pump or compressor in the Copen is run from it's own belt for it's exclusive use. The Daihatsu Part # is 90048-32095 Your best bet is to bring it to a dedicated aircon mechanic, as the issue could be something else - e.g. the magnetic clutch on the compressor has seized. The compressor is to the left of the engine
