Hi all, please excuse me hijacking my wife's account to ask this question.
As you may have seen in "Introductions" Anji has decided to buy the MY54 Copen, and I went off to look it over. Now the question! on driving it, there is a constant whizz from the engine. It is the only way I can describe it, I am assuming this is from the turbo, is this normal. I did notice that the engine cover is missing so, that may make a big difference to the sound. As for the rest of the look over, she (Bow), yes named already! is neat and tidy with an MOT check through the DVLA not throwing anything unexpected up. I would appreciate any input from you guys as you are using these cars and know them inside out. Thanks for reading.

A whistling noise as the turbo spools up is normal on turbocharged cars. Some cars are just louder than others.
The whistling noise occurs as the compressor in the turbo spins faster and starts to draw in air.

A turbo shouldn't be making any rattling noises or shrieking and if you think its gotten louder than normal then there may be a problem.

Also the noise from the turbo should only really be there when accelerating, because that's the only time there will be enough exhaust gasses passing through it to spool up the turbo. (unless you have an anti lag system or something)

When you lift off the throttle the only thing that should be heard is a little "tsh" as the blow off valve releases the pressurised air, but on most cars from factory, the "tsh" sound is not to be heard as they recirculate the air, rather than let it go into the atmosphere. But some cars from factory will recirculate some of the air and "blow off" the rest, so a "tsh" may still be heard on some un-modified cars.

A common modification is an aftermarket blow off valve. Aftermarket blow off valves are usually louder than factory ones as they tend to not recirculate any air and let it all go at once, and are designed to enhance the "tsh" sound.

Below is a video of a copen accelerating. As far as I'm concerned this is how a Copen should sound like, and if it sounds like this there is nothing wrong. You can just about hear the turbo, especially at around the start of the video.

But if your Copen sounds anything like this

    or this

Then something is most likely broken.

    I hope this helps.
If you think the turbo is making a strange noise or is too loud, then upload a video if possible so we can help out, or take it to a proper mechanic.

#AFRON1 thank you for the reply, I would say video 1 but louder when in the cabin. This gives me something to go thank you. I have driven Turbos before mainly Saabs but the whizz from the Copen is far more pronounced than I have heard before.

    Thanks Marc
