    Hello everyone,

We've kissed our Copen RL awake after its winter sleep.
The battery was disconnected. After reconnecting the battery, it started and everything worked fine, except for the roof and the trunk lock.

The roof warning light is constantly red, and the roof doesn't make any sound.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be, or how to find or narrow down the problem?

We look forward to hearing from you and send our best wishes from the north of Berlin.

Thomas & Dani & our little sweetheart with a broken roof

The manufacturer's manual for the car can be downloaded from this website. But matters pertaining to the roof mechanism are complicated and run to about fifty pages.

But perhaps a place to start is to just get the boot open manually. In the central cubby there is a plastic grommet which one removed reveal the manual pull wire for the boot center latch. Pull this. Then release the side latches manually: Tucked right up in the rear corners of the cabin are two (left, right) blue pulls. Pull these to release the side latches and then retrun to their original position. These pulls are not very obvious to see so some careful feeling around might be required.

In normal operation the center boot latch is worked by a motor. This motor also acts on two long steel cables in steel tubes which act on the side latches. The side latches have microswitches on then so if they are not released they will 'tell' the roof control module to disable roof functions.

Hopefully, now, with the boot open one can make an inspection for wetness. Lift off the carpeted cover over at the rear (hydraulic pump underneath) and inspect for wet. It can be like a fishtank down there. If so it needs to be dried out, dry as a bone, before further attempts at operation are made. If I recall, the roof control module is also down there which can fail due to wetness and for which the only option is replacement.

There is also the 'horizontal roller blind' (load level marker) running front to back in the boot. It's a simple thing, but if this is not in position in its clips this will disable roof functions. (One of the rebates for the blind has a proximity sensor).

Not necessarily a solution here but hopefully somewhere to start some investigation.

Oh dear, here we go again. My wife put the roof down today for the first time in years and forgot to remove the umbrella in the boot. I think the rear window is now tight up against umbrella and consequently the roof mechanism will not operate. I'll look tomorrow for the manual pull wire but can't say I've ever notice it before. Wish me luck.

Pulling the catch did nothing so went to our local independent garage, Derek Osgood, Winchester in desperation. The mechanic just pushed on the ajar boot lid, the motor whirred and we are delighted.
I didn't have the bottle to push down on the lid, knowing the back window was hard up against the obstruction. I wimped out so next time, be brutal!

    Hi Thomas,

I believe the best option would be to contact your nearest former Daihatsu dealer in Germany via https://www.daihatsu.de/.
Some of the ex-Daihatsu dealers are still operating and may be able to order parts for you.
