The mecanic informed me the turbo seal might be leaking as he has found oil in the intake . Can the copen turbo seals be serviced or is it a sealed unit. Im in australia so i need to obtain my parts from overseas. I hope it does not mean my turbo is on its way out. Only 80k on the clock 2003 copen manual.

    hi mate,

It could be , that your turbo is on way out......

How often did you change the oel? every 5000 Km?..with filter.
Do you fill up with 5 w30? I prefer 5 w40 , because my engine likes drinking oel , like his user beer... (5000 Km.one Liter)
    with 5 w 40 gets better now.
black or blue smoke at exaust?
    too much boost?
    leakings?

last way will be turbo recondition..if there is no crack in the housing..( often:cry:)

here is a german helpside..maybe you can tranlate it with google..

    Turbolader Fehlersuche

    Kai...good luck..

mine smoks sometimes allthough blue if its cold for short time.. but think to much boost..

Thanks for the info. I changed oil 5w 30 every 10k. My head gasket has a small oil leak too. I just wonder if the turbo people in australia would be able to recondition the turbo or not ? I read in another thread that the turbo was taken to a turbo specialist and they told the customer they couldnt take it apart...sounds strange?

Might want to make sure the oils not coming from a crankcase vent or something like that. Could be a clogged valve.

Another thing to check is for intake restrictions IE blocked air filter. If it's having trouble sucking air into the turbo it can create a vacuum that will suck oil past the seals no matter how good they are.

Even if the seal is leaking a bit, is it a problem? It will make emissions worse but they don't check that in OZ. It can also increase the chance of detonation but probably not an issue on standard boost.

If the turbos not noisy or not working I wouldn't worry about it. Mine has have a little oil in the intake since I owned it and there is no change in oil levels between services.

I have read that because the turbo is so small, it can be very hard to service, if at all. I would also check for other oil leaks and see if there is a common cause for them all. What is the engine oil level like? If there is too much oil in there it can start to pressurise the systems thus blowing gaskets/leaking etc.

Have you checked your turbo to make sure it's faulty?
It'd be annoying to spend $1200 and not fix the problem.

Agree with Jezz, many people would be very happy to sell you a new turbo whether it is faulty or not. Best to see if someone has the facility to test it first. It may be possible to use OBDII software to test the boost etc on it and compare the actual readings to the measurements that it should be. If not too different then you probably don't need a new turbo.
