Just bought a 659cc copen. Looking into servicing myself straight away. Cannot find anything on the net about alternative spark plugs, just the expensive denso and ngk iridium plugs. Any alternative ngk v groove (copper core) or Champion EON 1 copper core. Can anybody recommend??

The iridiums only cost me about £25, not a lot more than cheaper makes. If they do last longer then It will not be as expensive in the long run.

Saying that, mine were for the 1.3

Hi David and welcome to Copenworld .
Bosch platinums are available for the .7 copen and should be reasonably priced. I don't know what they are like in use though as my car has the boring 1.3 engine.:)

I have upgraded from a 1996 mgf and always used NGK Copper core v groove plugs which performed superior to platinum plugs from bosch. (Platinium is stated as they are difficult to change). Can i find the plug model for v groove for the 659cc copen????? I will just change them more frequently!!

Ah, ignore my last post then. :)
One of the 659cc owners will be along shortly and will be able to give you better advice with this.

On the mgf the rear hood has to come out, then rear shelf carpets, then inspection hatch 10 x 10mm bolts then standard plug change. Its time at the dealerships don't want to spend, but charge you for.

I don't know about the 0.7, Adam will come in sooner or later and have much better experience of what oil is best/recommended. Although I'd say use a full syn for turbo as it has higher temperature tolerance than a regular mineral oil. Its the degraded oil deposits that build up in the turbo leading it to overheat and go bang!

I guess a 10w40 is thicker and if oil runners hotter because of the turbo then it might be ok. I know it is for the 1.3.

I think you only really need 5w 30 if you have hydraulic tappets most cars will be ok with 10w 40. Thinner oil is better for cold starts in very low temps but I don't think the UK gets that low.

    Hi Dav1djame5, Welcome to Copenworld.
Flog the oil you have, get some Magnatec 5W30. Don't go to that Daihatsu dealers! They must be poor If they can't even recommend the correct oil!

I'm afraid I don't know any other spark plug types. The service manual only gives the NGK & DENSO parts. I'll have a look to see if there are any other choices.

I've had it 2 weeks and done 1000 miles. I also have a fabia vrs which is remapped to 170bhp (the oil burner). The copen is fun but the opposite to low down grunt of the diesel.

I know very little about daihatsu engines. I assume it has hydraulic tappets and an a timing chain as i cannot see covers for a cam belt. I have found the turbo is ihi rhf3 but eventually would like to look at alternatives and a bigger intercooler.
