Ok guys, need a bit of advice...
The Mrs 1.3 copen started to make a strange noise yesterday. Its hard to pin point where its coming form, but sounds like an alternator bearing or a worn belt.
But giving it some thought, it could even be the timing chain.

I did pop the oil cap off and the noise wasn't any louder.

Any ideas what to look for that might point me in the right direction?

    Thanks!

I would have thought the timing chain is probably the least likely culprit (assuming the car has been looked after).

Does the noise change at all when:

    Headlights are on/off?
Clutch is engaged/unengaged? Car is in/out of gear?
    Air con on/off?
    Engine is cold/hot?

If it’s the alternator, the heaviest load you can put on it is when you operate the roof. From a cold start, leave the bonnet open and drivers window, switch on the lights but leave a/c and fan off (because they’re noisy and you want to hear the engine bay), then operate the roof and listen for squeals.

Hello ,i think that the most common problem is the water pump, try to find the source by listening, use a mettalic extension over the engine as a doctor do with a sthephoscope.Take care with the engine turn on.
