Hi, does the Copen use a timing belt or a timing chain?

If it uses a timing chain, does it require replacement and what is the recommended replacement mileage?

Any other rubber belties to change and at what intervals as recommended by the manufacturer?

The 659 Copen does indeed have a timing chain.
Not sure if needs changing or not.

I think it has two normal belts one for the air con. One for the alternator & power steering. These belts should be inspected for wear/damage yearly & replaced as required.

timing chains only need changing if the start to be noisey.

I use photobucket to host my pictures. That then gives you an image link that you can just copy & paste into the message.

The 659 engine is known as the JB-DET engine. Also referred to as L880K, this code features in part of the chassis number.
I would've thought all 659 Copens use this same engine.

Im still wondering about this "chain belt" for the Copen -
We only have the turbo charge smaller engine in australia, and ive replaced 2 timing "belts". (every 100,000 kms). I ordered the last directly from Diahatsu in Japan. It is listed on their parts list in australia as a different number to the one in Japan. So i decided to go directly to Diahatsu and speak with an engineer who works on the engine management systems. After a wait to get someone who could speak english, i got a guy who understood me, and he said he would send me the timing "belt" number - and here it is - T35688710399A (which is the number Toyota use in defining the part for their ordering into australia.)
I also asked him that the manual refers to "timing chain". He said the manual is for ALL diahatsu vehicles, with some references to Copen while the main bulk of the manual is for other diahatsu "product" as he called it. I have replaced all the other rubber belts for aircon etc, as i didnt want to confuse them as some other belt. I stil have the old belt and the box it came in, marked "timing belt
Cpen880K2003 - genuine diahatsu part" Has anyone else had this discrepancy in timing belt or chain?

Is it a toothed belt or a v-belt?

    Hi,
take a look at the workshop manual for the 659 engine, Chapter "engine-B-42"
There is no Belt! only the maintenance-free chain :)

    greetings from Cologne,

    Hi there,
I have the manual, but it doesnt have the section that your referring to. I have the copen maintainance schedule from Japan, which i had sent out to me -
and it says timing belt - the manual is for all diahatsu not just copen. I had a Daihatsu sirion in 2003 - the manual for that is exactly the same as the copen for australia - what can i tell you mate? ive changed it twice and ive spoken to diahatsu direct. when i work out how to upload a pic, i can show you the invoice direct from Diahatsu - with my computer skills that might take me a while to figure it out!

    HI Dwayner,
if you go into the directory tab at the top of the forum you can download the specific service manual for the Copen. It isn't a generic manual.
All the pictures, service interval lists & instructions are just for the 659 Copen.

Also available is a 659 Copen information manual.
    In section B1-1
It describes the JB-DET engine as having chain driven DOHC.
Referring to the EU & Australian version. The only difference between the two is the standard of law adhered to for the emissions.
    In section B2-5
It shows a lovely cut away of the pistons & valves clearly showing the timing chain & tensioner.
    Section B2-8 to B2-10
Also shows nice picture of the timing chain & the smaller chain for the oil pump.

The Copen specific maintenance schedule are in the service manual in section A2-2
It doesn't specify a point to change the timing chain.
Only specifying the drive belts for the Alternator, Water Pump & Power steering. These only need to be replaced if worn or damaged.
I think these belts will be v style belts. Not the toothed type of a cambelt.

The timing chain would only be replaced if it wore noisey.

Did you ever get to see or keep the old part described as a timing belt? What did it look like?

It sure is a curious situation.
The Copen specific service manuals clearly show a timing chain.
I've been looking through my Japanese spare parts manual for the L880K Copen. I'll scan the page in on Monday but it shows a chain too. As it's all in Japanese I couldn't figure out what the actual part number for the chain is.
However I could see the part numbers for the belts.
I've tried to compare the part number on Dwayners reciept to the ones in the spares manual. None of the belts match.

I've done a google search for the part number on Dwayners reciept & found this:
    http://www.minitrucktalk.com/archive/index.php/t-8180.html

It shows that timing belt is for a 1.5 Charade.

Also found this, check the Daihatsu tab at the top of the document:
    http://web.singnet.com.sg/~tpdragon/catalog/sampletb.xls

It shows the belt fits to a Daihatsu HD engine. Not the Copens DB-JET L880K engine.

I think I'd be asking questions with the garage.

You can attach small-ish pictures to any post by clicking on the little paperclip at the top of the message box when you're creating a post. Using this option, the attachment can be uploaded directly from your computer to copenworld.

Alternatively, you can link to a picture hosted anywhere on the internet (e.g. photobucket) by clicking on the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the message box (it looks like a little postcard with mountains on it).

Thanks Adam, for doing such Thorough investigation.
It really is a curious situation indeed.
I have had the car almost for 10 years, the Service centre i use is considered one of the best in Australia for Toyota, in regard to its service and reputation.
I have never had an issue with them before.
Secondly, it is clearly marked on my manual as i showed you so im now totally confused - especially since i have the old timing belt, as well as the other 2 belts i had replaced for the 100,000km service, and the 200,000 km service.
it is totally baffling to me! but thanks for all the investigating.
It tends to go against what i was told by the guy at Daihatsu in Kyoto as well.
I will be in Japan in August on business, and will make a point of going to them personally - see what i can find out! Could it be that australia had different specifications? i know the Sirion in New Zealand was a different engine, same size as the australian one, so maybe, but ill get back to you and thank you again Adam.

Can you take a photo of the old belt & of the engine?
Does your chassis number have the "L880K" in it?
