    Hi All,

My wife's Copen has started leaking in to the boot - it seems to be pooling right in the centre, so I'm guessing it's coming in from the brake light. If I remove the light am I going to be able to reseal with silicon or something, or is it a seperate rubber seal? It looks as though it already has some sealent and I don't want to make it worse by ripping it all out!

    Thanks,

    Greg

    Welcome to Copenworld Greg.
The centre brake light is the culprit, it's a common issue.
Not had it myself though, so I can't help describe how it all seals up.

Some other members recently went through the same repair, perhaps they can give more detail. How about it peeps?

Would you mind taking photos whilst your fixing it? Then post them on the forum after?
As it's a common issue, it would be nice to have a photo guide on how to fix it for future reference.

Will certainly take some pics if I give it a go - rather worried about the possibility of losing whatever seal is already there though, so might have to psyche myself up for it!

I did try undoing the bolts on the underside, thinking it would just pop off, but I think it's stuck in place by the existing seal. In the meantime I've dried out the boot and will check again next weekend to see how much water is getting in naturally - most of it might just be my excessive hosing down when cleaning :)

    Broken High Level Brake Light.

    Hi all.

I've just read the above thread & have the exact problem. On trying to solve the problem, I managed to break the corner of the light.arrrggggggghhh!!!!:-((

So does any one know the part number or where a replacement can be bought. I noticed its a toyota unit but after many hours of internet trawling nothing is coming to light. Even tried 'Parts Gateway' with no luck. Please help, it's the wife's car & she truly loves it & not in the good books.

Durdyg70 - Did you actually remove the light? If so was it bonded in with sealant?

Just looked through my spare parts manual.
It only shows the brake light as a unit. It dosen't show a seperate seal in the exploded view. I was hoping the exploded view might have shown how things fit.
However it does list another number that might be the seal or fasteners.
The brake light assembly is = 81570-97222-000
the second part number which you need two of is = 90179-05011-000

    Hi Greg.

Yeah the light was bonded to the seal. I cut it with a craft knife gently working around the light fitting and lifting it gently every now and then. To Lift the light out, lift the front edge out( looking at the light from the back of the car) first as there are lugs on the back edge. Just be careful to edge it out slowly as I was a little to rough due to being frozen and managed to snap the left hand corner of the light fitting. Hope this helps.......

My beautiful little Copen also had this boot leak so today, on a lovely sunny day we decided to tackle the problem. Using the information above, we undid the bolts in the boot and unplugged the electrics.

We then used two old loyalty/credit cards to work around the light from the outside. That way, you can find the clips mentioned above without breaking them. There are two hooked clips along the long straight edge at the rear of the car and two locating lugs (without hooks) along the curved edge.

Once we had broken the seal all the way round, taking care not to push against the hooked clips on the straight edge, we used the cards to push gently against the locating lugs and out it popped.

Just off now to see if we can buy some foam to make a new gasket, otherwise it will be carefully applied silicone and put it back together ready for tomorrow's commute.

I love my Copen (an my husband for doing this job with me) :D

Yes if I do try to fix it I'll make sure I take some photos. There is the first twos, mines not flooded its just some droplets but its the mat thats bit soaked. Do you think its a leak, condensation or water off the roof when folded in ?

    It's hard to tell.
Put some news paper down, under the brake light position. Then pore water over the brake light on the boot with a hose or watering can.
If you gets some blobs on the paper you know it's the seal on the brake light.
