» VAT Increase Inflates UK Copen Price |
|
Jan 23, 2010 - 7:33 PM - by rushmere
|

As expected, the published price of a Copen in the UK increased a little at the start of the year to reflect the increase in VAT from 15% to 17.5%.
The "On the road" price is now up to £11,822 from £11,745. The cost of accessories have also risen.
However, new Daihatsus remain hard to find in the UK.

» Merry Christmas! |

Dec 21, 2009 - 7:45 PM - by rushmere

Thank you for supporting the website since it was born just three months ago, and I hope to see you all again in 2010.
I shall be away on holiday for about a month from Christmas Eve. I'm hoping to have internet access for some of the time while I'm away, so I'll pop in occasionally to say hello and to check on any problems. However, it does mean that there will probably be no significant updates to the site until the end of January. I've got quite a few ideas for developing copenworld further next year, so I hope you can stick around and enjoy it with me.
Until then, I hope you all have a fantastic Christmas, and a very Happy New Year.

» The Daihatsu UK Saga Continues..... [Updated] |
|
Dec 16, 2009 - 7:46 AM - by rushmere
|
Copenworld member "Rex" has received a letter from a Newport Daihatsu dealer stating:
It is with deep regret I have to inform you of Daihatsu's decision to withdraw from the UK market due to currency pressures on the Japanese Yen.
The current position relates to car sales only. All warranty, servicing and parts supply will continue to be supported by us as normal...
Going forwards, we are unable to supply new Daihatsu products...
We can assure that your vehicle part exchange will be unaffected against any of our products and hope our new exciting range of cars will be of interest to you in the future.
It remains to be seen whether this is one dealer who has taken up the rumoured offer to cease their Daihatsu franchise, or whether Daihatsu really is fully withdrawing from the UK.
Daihatsu themselves are still publicly stating that this is a temporary hold on imports rather than complete withdrawal from the UK, but the full position remains unclear.
Update: A user on copenownersclub.org.uk, has posted to say "I work for Daihatsu, but can't say too much else other than they have withdrawn and I am afraid won't be supplying to the UK again under the Daihatsu name". Does this mean we might be seeing the Toyota Copen for sale in future???

There are forecasts of heavy snow across much of the UK later this week, so don't forget to stock up on de-icer!
"What Car?" is reporting claims from the AA that there is a shortage of salt for treating roads in half of UK local authorities. Although the Local Government Association is accusing the AA of "ridiculous scaremongering", there is always a risk of dangerous road conditions, so stay safe out there if you really have to venture out in your Copen!

» The Rumours Continue! [Updated] |
|

Is Daihatsu still in the UK market or not? The rumours are continuing to fly around today.
Car Dealer Magazine is now reporting that Daihatsu's future in the UK hangs in the balance:
"News has reached the Car Dealer Magazine office that Daihatsu cars will no longer be brought into the country by importer IM Group.
Car Dealer Magazine has also heard that Daihatsu car dealers are being offered the sweetener of a Chinese car franchise by IM Group instead."
A further story refutes rumours that Toyota (which owns a controlling 51.2% stake in Daihatsu) will be taking over UK distribution.
Perhaps IM Group is simply looking for alternatives to keep dealers going in a difficult economic climate?
Update December 15: Car Dealer Magazine is now reporting that UK Daihatsu dealers are being offered franchises for new Chinese car manufacturer "Great Wall Motors". They are also being offered the option to end their Daihatsu franchise.

» Daihatsu Finally Withdrawing from the UK? [Updated] |
|
Dec 13, 2009 - 4:57 PM - by rushmere
|
There have been rumours for some time now about Daihatsu withdrawing from the UK market.
This follows a pause in imports of any new cars which has been in place for some weeks, blamed mainly on the poor exchange rate with the Japanese Yen.
User "becky1981" has posted on copenownersclub.org.uk stating that she has received a letter from her Daihatsu dealer confirming Daihatsu's withdrawal from the UK.
It will be a real shame if this turns out to be accurate, and there is no reason to doubt the claims.
On the plus side, Daihatsu pulled out of Australia in March 2006, and there seems to have been no real problem with continuing to get service and support via Daihatsu's parent company Toyota.
Updated: Daihatsu denies any withdrawal from the UK. I got the following statement from Daihatsu today (December 14th): "Daihatsu have not pulled out of the UK, however due to the current value of the pound against the yen we are unable to import any new cars".

» Car Mats Can Kill! |
|
Dec 08, 2009 - 10:20 PM - by rushmere
|
The Mainichi Daily Times in Japan reports that there have been at least 13 car accidents in Japan in the last year caused by car mats. This has usually been caused by the driver's mat getting caught on the pedals causing uncontrolled acceleration.
Earlier this year, Toyota was forced to recall 3.8 million cars in the USA due to potentially dangerous mats fitted to many of their cars.
The Japanese Transport Ministry offers this advice: "In case of uncontrolled acceleration, the driver should turn off the engine or put the vehicle in neutral, and then apply the brakes".
It's well worth checking that your mats are properly secured to prevent them from getting snarled up in the pedals.

» Simplified Access to Members-Only Information |
|
Dec 08, 2009 - 9:25 PM - by rushmere

A few parts of the site (such as the Copen Owner's Manual) are only available to copenworld members.
These areas were previously protected by a username and password. However, this has been causing a fair amount of confusion, so I've now simplified and improved the method for accessing these areas.
You will now automatically get access to these areas so long as you have been registered on the site for at least one day and have posted at least one message on any forum.
So long as you are logged in, you will see any content which is available only to members. This improved method of dynamically displaying different content to different people will allow the site to be developed further in future to deliver information and services exclusively to registered members.
